List of Genders
The concept of gender is complex and varies across different cultures and communities. While traditionally, many societies recognized only two genders (male and female), there is now broader understanding and recognition of many different gender identities. Below is a non-exhaustive list of some gender identities people may use to describe themselves:
- Male
- Female
- Transgender (an umbrella term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned at birth)
- Nonbinary (a gender identity that doesn’t fit within the traditional categories of male or female)
- Genderqueer (similar to nonbinary, often used to express a gender identity that is outside of or beyond the binary)
- Genderfluid (a gender identity or expression that changes over time)
- Agender (having no gender or identifying as genderless)
- Bigender (identifying as two genders, either simultaneously or switching between them)
- Demiboy (partially, but not fully, identifying as a boy/man or masculine)
- Demigirl (partially, but not fully, identifying as a girl/woman or feminine)
- Two-Spirit (a gender identity in some Indigenous North American cultures, encompassing a variety of gender roles)
- Androgynous (having a mix of both male and female characteristics or identifying as neither distinctly male nor female)
- Intergender (identifying between genders or as a combination of genders)
- Neutrois (a nonbinary gender identity that is often associated with neutrality or null gender)
This list is not exhaustive, as language and understanding of gender continue to evolve. People may use different terms based on their personal, cultural, or community context. It’s important to respect each person’s chosen identity and pronouns.
