There are several frameworks for categorizing teaching types, but one commonly accepted classification divides teaching into three main types:
- Teacher-Centered Teaching: In this traditional approach, the teacher is the primary authority and source of knowledge. Lessons are structured, and the teacher directs the learning process. Methods include lectures, demonstrations, and direct instruction.
- Learner-Centered Teaching: This approach puts the student at the center of the learning process. Teachers facilitate rather than direct, encouraging students to actively participate, collaborate, and take responsibility for their learning. Methods include discussions, group work, and problem-based learning.
- Content-Centered Teaching: This type focuses primarily on delivering specific content or curriculum. The emphasis is on covering material and achieving learning objectives, often balancing teacher and learner roles, and using both direct instruction and interactive activities.
Each type has its strengths and can be applied based on the subject matter, learning goals, and student needs.
