Sir Flinders Petrie is widely regarded as the "Father of Archaeology." He was a British archaeologist and Egyptologist who revolutionized archaeological methods in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Petrie introduced systematic excavation techniques, careful record-keeping, and the use of stratigraphy and seriation for dating artifacts, setting the foundation for modern archaeological practice.
However, some also refer to Heinrich Schliemann (who excavated Troy) or Giovanni Battista Belzoni as early pioneers in the field. Still, Flinders Petrie is most commonly credited with giving archaeology its scientific basis and methodology, earning him the title "Father of Archaeology."
